Once you choose a planet, the War Table will allow you to choose an operation to partake in. Operations consist of up to three missions, with a variety of primary objectives, like eradicating bug infestations, destroying enemy supplies, and retrieving valuable data.

The best shooters encourage players to take part in a way that suits the game’s tone and universe, and Helldivers 2 is certainly one of them. You play in a sort of demented panic, calling in airstrikes with abandon and getting through ammo so fast you end up carrying huge backpacks of the stuff everywhere you go.

Plus, some elements of the post-processing, like the screen-space reflections, didn't give very much of an Unreal impression to me. It turns out that the game is using a modified version of the discontinued Autodesk Stingray game engine, which makes more sense. A variant of this engine powered the excellent Warhammer 40K: Darktide, and while Helldivers 2 isn't quite as striking, I think the game looks strong overall. But Environmental critiques are fine but perhaps miss the point: Helldivers 2 is an action-packed title, and much of your time is spent engaging with the game's insect and robotic foes. These firefights can look pretty extraordinary, especially when all four players are tightly clustered, trying to defend an objective. The key here is how enemies react when shot: each bullet strike spawns little bits of blood or smoke, alongside chunks of viscera or mechanical bits. It makes the simple act of firing at enemies satisfying.

Its tight gameplay loop, excellent combat, and clever squad dynamics also make it one of the best and most fun tactical co-op shooters in years. And that’s good news for democracy.

The game is priced at $quarenta, which is a pretty significant investment. However, the amount of fun that I’ve had just by spreading blind democracy in the name of freedom is unmatched.

Every firefight feels like a war between trying to eradicate every enemy on the screen and just taking off and running for your life, in a way that’s somehow both extremely nerve-wracking and absolutely hilarious.

Always keep an eye out for samples on the map. They lead to research points, which are the only way to upgrade your weapons/stratagems.

With pelo story mode or alternate game modes, I’m curious how much there will be for players to do beyond grinding the same missions ad nauseum, especially with pelo clear content roadmap laid out as of yet. That said, with only two enemy factions at the moment, it seems likely the third one from the original Helldivers 2 Gameplay Helldivers could be added into the mix at some point, which could easily keep the good times rolling.

The good news is that, even if content is light initially, what I played of it was more than enough to get me excited about laughing with friends as we blast our way through killer robots, and I can’t wait to play more.

However, now the game has released, this page can be used to see how the information we had compares to the experience itself. 

Your strategy also depends on which mission you’re taking on, and you do need to consider your armor alongside your weapons. As stated in the co-op and combat trailer, each mission will require specific load-outs which are worth considering, so you’ll need to get really familiar with your available equipment in order to successfully take down any larger enemies.

As with all Automaton units, the plodding Hulk is brainlessly optimized to do nothing except deliver heavy firepower.
